The consumption of luxury has evolved due to the ever changing landscape of this world, defined by the generations shaping the narrative. Luxury, which was once reserved for the selected few, has become so overused that it no longer serves as a want; rather, a need.
From the stylised personas we craft on our socials to the instant availability of branded goods, luxury is everywhere. Individuals are able to brandish their voices regardless of medium. Hence, luxury has become emotionally self-indulgent for anyone to define without any consequences.
Thus the birth of ;publication. Recognizing the luxury we have of being in a safe space, ;publication sets out to welcome our readers to embrace their individual ideas of luxury. Guided through curated segments highlighting our understanding of what forms us as humans - love, voice and identity - through drape structure & digitality.
As we tackle the changing demands of the industry and enter into this post pandemic world, we need to greater question our role in this shifting landscape. Every aspect of life seems to have been displaced, from adjusting to the new normal to demanding for better futures while reminding ourselves not to become complacent in our past habits. Having been thrown into a new age of digital technologies changing our perspective and the very outlook of what fashion is becoming, we have learnt to shape new ways of thinking about fashion.
At LASALLE College of the Arts, we offer a critical and multi-disciplinary environment for our students to collaborate and question the industries’ future - a space of speculation and wonder, for us to shape and nurture new storytellers, imagemakers, fashion designers, curators and producers. It is, in this light that LUXURY 2.0: Drape, Structure and Digitality provokes and questions what is the future of luxury from the ASEAN region. LUXURY 2.0: Drape, Structure and Digitality is a multi-disciplinary project featuring the works from the BA(Hons) Fashion Media and Industries, as well as BA(Hons) Fashion Design and Textiles programmes. Conceived as a creative collective, students work collaboratively to create a multi-layered fashion exhibition across both physical and digital platforms.
Through the use of powerful visuals and 3-D renderings of objects and garments, the boundaries of digital futures within fashion and traditional modes of practices are blurred. We invite you to reflect on our current times and partake in our excitement to reshape the
future of fashion.
Welcome to LUXURY 2.0.
Head of School of Fashion at
LASALLE College of the Arts
2021 marks the second year we’re living in the pandemic. Life has changed irrevocably for everyone - you and I included. However, life continues and the ethos of creativity and art-making lives as testament and fact to humanity’s indomitable spirit. Here at School of Fashion, our students truly embody this, and ;publication is an ode to this human spirit.
Through the lens of LUXURY, the level 2 students from the BA (Hons) Fashion Media & Industries and Fashion Design & Textiles programmes set out to create this monumental work that you are gazing at and experiencing.
;publication relooks the meaning of LUXURY through DRAPE, STRUCTURE & DIGITALITY. Through this brief, the students tackle socio-cultural and socio-political issues that matter to them, traversing identity, love and voice by using their formidable image-making and design skills to create evocative stories that showcase the human condition.
It has been a long and arduous journey filled with sweat, blood, tears with sleepless nights, soul searching and honestly, loads of fun. As a cohort level project that’s intentionally designed to disrupt normal modes of learning, this project has taken a creative turn that has certainly made us, as their educators, extremely proud.
So what is the new Luxury? To us, our students best embody this.
